S.B. 674, by Democratic state Sen. Lena Gonzalez, would require monitoring around biofuel refineries and other industrial activities related to refineries.

SACRAMENTO, California — California lawmakers Thursday sent a bill to Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom’s desk to tighten air quality monitoring around refineries.

S.B. 674, by state Sen. Lena Gonzalez (D), would expand air monitoring around refineries to include ones that produce biofuels and would cover more activities adjacent to refineries, like oil storage and electricity generation.

Gonzalez said in a statement she was urging Newsom “to sign it into law to safeguard the health and wellbeing of Californians who have been harmed by refinery pollution for far too long.”

The bill would strengthen the refinery fence-line and community air monitoring program that was created through legislation from state Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi (D) in 2017.
