Defenders of Wildlife welcomed a new president and CEO on Monday after its longtime leader left the nonprofit earlier this summer.
Andrew Bowman returned to the Washington-based conservation group as its boss following the July departure of former President and CEO Jamie Rappaport Clark.
Bowman most recently worked as president and CEO of the Land Trust Alliance. Prior to that, he worked as the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation’s program director for the environment and in Oregon as Defenders’ private lands conservation counsel.
He takes the helm of the group after a few tumultuous years for the organization. Defenders’ management and staff have struggled to finalize a collective bargaining agreement after employees unionized in 2021. The group’s staff went on strike for two days in July, citing an ongoing dispute about pay and benefits.
