Biden admin to agencies: Find ‘right balance’ on remote work

A new guidance says leaders across the government need to ensure the mission comes first when employees work from home.

The Biden administration is advising agencies to give careful consideration of their staff’s arrangements to work outside the office.

The Office of Personnel Management on Wednesday released new guidance on remote work. The issue has become a hot topic of debate in Washington with pressure growing to have civil servants work in person more often in the post-pandemic era.

OPM acting Director Robert Shriver said in the memo, sent to agency and department heads as well as inspectors general, that remote work can be “a significant benefit” to employers but is not suitable for every job in government.

“Striking the right balance of in-person work and use of workplace flexibilities such as remote work is critical to support the long-term organizational health of federal agencies,” Shriver said.
