A political appointee in the Interior Department resigned Wednesday in a public protest of the Biden administration’s support for Israel’s war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
Lily Greenberg Call, who was appointed the special assistant to the chief of staff, Rachael Taylor, in early 2023, stepped down from her post in a letter she released publicly.
“I can no longer in good conscience continue to represent this administration amidst President Biden’s disastrous, continued support for Israel’s genocide in Gaza,” Greenberg Call wrote in the letter addressed to Interior Secretary Deb Haaland.
Greenberg Call, who identified herself as an “American Jew” in the letter, notes she also volunteered for Vice President Kamala Harris’ failed Democratic presidential nomination bid in 2019 and worked for President Joe Biden’s campaign in Arizona in 2020.
The former Biden administration political appointee confirmed her departure in an interview with the Associated Press.
Biden “is making Jews the face of the American war machine. And that is so deeply wrong,” Greenberg Call told the AP.
The Interior Department did not respond to a request for comment.
Greenberg Call becomes the first Interior aide to resign in protest of the White House’s continued support for Israel’s war against Hamas in GAzaand the fifth mid- or senior-level administration staffer to resign, according to the AP.
