Commercial airlines and biofuel industry groups pressed key lawmakers Wednesday to boost agriculture-based fuels for aircraft in the next five-year farm bill.
In a letter to leaders of the House and Senate Agriculture committees, advocates for sustainable aviation fuel asked Congress to ensure that SAF is eligible for bioenergy programs at the Department of Agriculture and receives favorable modeling for greenhouse gas emissions.
Specifically, groups including Airlines for America, Growth Energy and the Renewable Fuels Association urged inclusion of a bill called the “Farm to Fly Act” — H.R. 6271 and S. 3637 — by Rep. Max Miller (R-Ohio) and Sen. Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) in the farm legislation’s energy title.
In their letter, the airlines and associations said sustainable aviation fuel “presents an opportunity to expand U.S. markets for agricultural goods, bolster our nation’s rural economy and provide a renewable, low-emission domestic energy supply for the aviation sector.”
