Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump may be toning down his attacks on electric vehicles and EV tax credits as he seeks to curry favor with one of his most high-profile supporters: EV mogul Elon Musk.
Trump said Monday that he would be willing to offer the billionaire CEO of Tesla a role in his administration — possibly a Cabinet position — if he gets elected in November.
Asked Monday whether he would consider hiring Musk, the former Republican president said, “He’s a very smart guy. I certainly would. If he would do it, I certainly would.”
And when pressed on whether he would want to eliminate the $7,500 tax credit for EV purchases in Democrats’ 2022 climate law, Trump said he is “not making any final decisions on it.” Trump has promised to scrap Biden administration rules promoting EVs but has been more nuanced about the credits.
